Circle of Art Announcement
Saline Picture Frame Co. will be hosting an art show to benefit the Food Gatherers of Washtenaw County. The idea of a benefit show has been percolating for some time – an event that would combine a showcase for many of the artists that we know and a fund raiser for a local organization.
The inspiration for a Circle of Art show came from our friend Valerie Mann, a local artist and educator who runs the successful Artists Among Us lecture series in Saline. Valerie participated in a New York show, A Night of a Thousand Drawings, which benefited the NY art center Artists Space. The premise of the show was that artists were asked to donate drawings which could fit into a standard #10 envelope which would then be displayed en masse and auctioned off to raise money for the center.
We borrowed the concept of many small pieces to create a large effect to come up with A Circle of Art – a cooperative way to help our community.
*The Circle - As a frame shop we consider our circle to include artists like you, our customers and our community. This show is a way to connect all the points. Three hundred and sixty is the degrees it takes to make a circle and a nice round number for a show (it is also about all we have space for in our shop!)
*The Charity - We discussed and researched local charitable groups and chose Food Gatherers for several reasons. Food Gatherers has a laudable mission – to combat hunger in Washtenaw County by gathering surplus food which might otherwise be wasted. They have worked towards their mission by developing circles of volunteers, local businesses and service providers - distributing over 20 million pounds of food since 1988. They enlarge the circle by working with local, state and nationwide charities to alleviate hunger throughout our community.
*The Artists - We will ask about 75 artists that we know to start the circle by participating in the show. We will also ask them to extend the invitation to their circle of friends and students. Our goal is to generate 360 pieces in this fashion. (over)
*The Submission Guidelines - The Circle of Art Show is a non-juried invitational show open to any artist whose circle connects to Saline Picture Frame Co. or The Food Gatherers.
*A maximum of two pieces may be submitted by any artist.
*Pieces must be no larger than 8.5 x 11”
*Any media is acceptable as long as it meets the size limits
*Submissions are requested to be at Saline Picture Frame Co. by 4/30/05
*Unsold pieces will be returned to the artist
*The Display - All works will be museum matted by SPFC and displayed in clear sleeves. Artist information will be attached to the back of the sleeve. The matted work will be hung throughout our shop from May 9th through May 15th.
*The Auction - We will display the art beginning May 9, 2005. Bidding for the silent auction will begin at that point with a minimum bid of $10.00 per piece. Bids will be accepted though May 15, 2005. SPFC will host a Gala Party from 1 to 6 on Sunday, May 15th. The auction will close at the end of the party. All sales proceeds will be donated to the Food Gatherers.
*Sounds Like the Artists are Doing all the Heavy Lifting – What is Saline Picture Frame Contributing? True - the artists are the generous ones supplying the talent but SPFC will be donating all the presentation, and the publicity. We will then throw a great party on the 15th and together raise some money for Food Gatherers. We hope you’ll join the circle…
